Abnormally high levels of dopamine are linked to loss of contact with reality, delusions and lack of emotion, while low levels have been associated with addictive behaviour and risk taking. Dopamine – and its derivative, norepinephrine – are considered a single chemical. This is the energizing, “gas pedal” chemical that promotes increased feelings of pleasure, alertness, wakefulness, assertiveness and aggressiveness. This chemical heightens energy, speeds up thoughts and improves muscle coordination. It steps up your good mood. However, too much norepinephrine causes anxiety and aggression, stimulates violent behaviors, and causes schizophrenia, paranoia and psychosis. • 5 Beta-endorphin
