Habitate. Damiana is found in Mexico, South America, Texas, West Indies.
Description. This is a small shrub; leaves smooth and pale green on upper side, underneath glabrous, with a few hairs on the ribs, ovo-lanceolate, shortly petiolate wth two small glands at base; flowers yellow, rising singly from axils of the leaves; capsule one-selled, splitting into three pieces; smell aromatic; taste characteristic, bitterish, aromatic and resinous.
Constituents. A greenish volatile oil, smelling a little like chamomile but with greater depth and frangrance, amorphous bitter principle Damianin, resins and tannin.
Action and Uses. If the wonderful aroma has anything to give away as to its function, then you can smell its sexual fragrance; uplifting, arousing, stimulating to both women and men.
Tonic, acting directly on the reproductive organs, stimulant, hypochondriastic, aphrodisiac, erectile dysfunction.
Aphrodisiac, tonic, stomachic.
Damiana has also been shown to enhance sexual satisfaction in women.
An extract was shown to stimulate sexual activity in impotent (or sluggish) male rats, although it had no effect on normal, sexually potent, animals.
It also had no effect on locomotor activity.
Damiana is sometimes incorporated into anti-obesity preparations with apparent benefits.
The leaves are antidepressant.
